Toon: McCain's Remaining Supporters

The KKK garb is a slight exaggeration, but most of those shouted epithets are of course from actual Palin or McCain rallies.

Labels: cartoons, cwa, elections, mccain, obama, race and racism

Mikhaela, I was curious to know: what's your opinion of Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr?

I don't know a great deal about him--from what I've read, not a fan, even though he's moved away from some of his former disgusting Republican ways. Certainly I have positions on a few issues that overlap with libertarian positions generally (on LGBT rights and separation of church and state and medical marijuana, etc.) but I'm a progressive who believes in a strong social safety net and universal health care and a strong public education system, not laissez-faire politics that let the rich get richer and leave the poor out in the cold

now I'm kind of suspicious as to your question--I got several emails with almost the identical question you asked, Josh...

Okay, you caught me. I'm doing whatever it takes to try and get Bob elected, including posting on the websites of and sending e-mails to people who can reach a large audience with their opinions... and editorial cartoonists as well.

Also, I fear you may be buying into some misconceptions about the libertarian philosophy. We do not want to "leave the poor out in the cold" as you put it. If you check their official policies, you may see where your misconceptions lie.

I'm quite aware of libertarian positions--like I said, when it comes to abortion rights and same-sex marriage, sure, I would agree with those positions. But your official party platform is all about the so-called "free market" (which has never really been free) and "free trade" and leaving health care and the economy in the hands of fickle market forces. I believe in communities coming together to share risks and benefits--in single-payer healthcare financed by taxes, in strong public and community institutions, in fair trade and a living wage. I believe in economic justice, not a free-for-all.
