Cartoon: The He-Cession!

Only 3% of Fortune 500 companies have women CEOs--clearly that's 3% too many!

Drawn for Women's eNews (temporary link here).

and I'll bet one of them is most regrettably running for governor of my fair state...unfortunately.

Well, of course just being a woman is no sign of being a progressive (Palin... Thatcher... Dole... Coulter... eeek!)! And it's not as if Fortune 500 CEOS are my favorite class of individual in general. Still, there's a big old imbalance!

It will take a while but as a greater amount of wealth and power, a side effect of college education (where women outnumber men by a slight amount recently), are garnered by women there will be some level of equity at the highest level. While women as a group are no more enlightened than men politically (no matter your politics the other side to yours has evenly distributed female villains) I would rather have Dole than Bush on my board of directors since if profit is the motive one has a better record than the other.

For the rest of us, your children will most likely be working for women most of their lives. Retail, services and education are pretty big sectors of the economy and at the entry level are dominated by women.

Most of my jobs (education, retail, services) I was hired by women, even in the military often my first line NCO was female and/or the majority of my unit (a small one) was female. This is not the norm in the military but it is not unheard of.

I usually love your work, Michaela, but I have to disagree with this cartoon. At the bottom of the economic ladder, both women and men are being victimized by these CEOs, whether the CEOs are men or women. I'm fairly sure that less than a ten-millionth of unemployed men are deriving any sort of benefit from having 97% men as CEOs and high executives.

The people affected by this recession, no matter the gender, are hurting. Economic justice at the top may affect a few people overall, but economic justice at the bottom will affect the majority of the citizens of the U.S. and the world.

I totally understand--but it's not just the ranks of CEOS that continue to be completely male-dominated, that was just an example. Major political positions are also still well over 70% male-dominated... women still make far less than men at the same types of jobs... etc.
